   Proposal Description:
   Imaging-based biomarkers can contribute to improved accuracy in the diagnosis     of cognitive impairment by complementing symptom-based clinical criteria with     evidence for the underlying pathology. In the present study we plan to evaluate   novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based biomarkers for cerebrovascular       disease (beyond lesion load) with respect to the diagnosis of vascular dementia   (differentiation from cognitively normal subjects which often also show some      age-associated cerebrovascular pathology) and with respect to the                 differentiation between vascular dementia, pure Alzheimer???s disease and mixed                                                                                   dementia. We will focus on white matter hyperintensities (WMH) that can be        detected in T2 FLAIR images.
